I saw Monica Bonvicini's work at the Baltic and found it extremely interesting. Responding to the "impact of architecture", whether its urban, institutional or private, Bonvicini explores themes such as fetishism, sexuality and feminism through her work. Her work brings together ideas of the production of art in relation to the production of meaning, Bonvicini is aware of the contradicting elements of the materials that are used within her work, questioning masculinity, femininity, gender, sex and more. Bonvicini designed the entire gallery space, 700 square meters of corridors, rooms and small spaces, to showcase around 25 works selected by the artist made from 1999-2016.
I found this exhibition incredibly interesting because of the scale of the gallery. It is really interesting to see an exhibition that has been entirely curated by an artist, I would strive to be able to do this. Being fully immersed within Bonvicini's work allowed me to appreciate each piece from various angles and understand the body of work as a whole.
