Artist Influence

Eva Hesse

Eva Hesse's work explores the use of various materials, these are usually 'found' materials such as wire, rope and string. Her work explores the way materials can be used to convey psychological moods and sexual innuendo. I think the minimalist display of these materials is beautiful and lets the viewer appreciate these mundane, everyday objects as a new entity. Hesse's piece untitled shows a tangle of rope encased

in latex, this is one of her final works and was produced at a time where Hesse was struggling with illnesses and undergoing operations to remove a brain tumor. I think that the piece shows the anguish and emotion that would have been felt by Hesse at the time and to show this through hanging a piece of rope is incredible. Her work also features nylon tights being stretched into linear objects and fishnets weighed down with a ball constructed of sand, paper and clear polyethelene. Her work is very suggestive despite being made solely of found materials, the use of tights and fishnets heighten the sexuality of the piece.
