Jenny Saville

Jenny Saville creates large scale paintings of the human form, often focusing on women who are overweight or obese. In her work, Saville depicts flesh using oil and thick layers of acrylic paint which texturize the piece and can make her work incredibly realistic. I often look to Saville's work as i find her subject matter very interesting and the way she applies paint is something i have experimented with before. In Branded Saville depicts an overly large woman gripping sections of her flesh and staring down onto the viewer. Words such as "support", "decorative" and "unattractive" can be seen carved into the woman's flesh. To me, the piece feels powerful and almost liberating, Saville often plays with scale in her work and so the dramatic size of the piece paired with the graphic nature of the piece makes it overbearing. Saville portrays her subject matter as exposed and often highlights the imperfections, I think this is what draws me to her work. The amplified and oversized flaws in the piece, such as the rolls of skin, are forced upon the viewers which makes Saville's work so powerful.
