Caroline Achaintre is a mixed media artist who's work draws heavily on primitivism and expressionism. I recently saw Achaintre's exhibition at the Baltic. On show was an array of sculpture, drawings, and paintings. The sculptures were hand tufted wool wall hangings that dominated each wall. I found these sculptures particularly interesting as they represented faces in an abstract way. I thought the size of some of the pieces made them powerful but almost overbearing, the pieces reminded me of the pareidolia phenomenon, which is when the brain finds the image of a face within an object.
