My work has always focused on the human body, throughout my earlier education I turned to portraiture and found interest in depicting faces, hands and various human body parts. I have never found an interest in depicting landscapes and I often struggled with creating backgrounds for paintings. In a way, sculpture has eliminated my dilemma with painting backgrounds, however it was replaced with ideas of how I wanted to present my work; with painting, I felt it was somewhat easier to decide the location, with sculpture I quickly realised that I would have to determine how the piece would be displayed alongside considering the location and how the piece would be perceived and understood by various audiences.
Since I have begun using sculpture as a means of making art, I feel that the emphasis on depicting the body has amplified, I have focused on creating depictions of full human bodies, it is the first time I have used the entire form in my work.
